Synopsis

Norbert Alter examines human exchanges as complex interactions that form emotional, cultural, and symbolic bonds. Exchanges are fundamentally based on reciprocity but are rarely balanced in simple terms of equivalence; they involve various economic, social, emotional, and symbolic layers. Gifting implies an expectation of return—whether a gesture, service, or recognition—highlighting that these transactions are not merely material but also deeply symbolic.

Exchanges often involve asymmetry, which can imply power dynamics or dependency but is not always negative; it can also signify generosity or support if perceived as fair.

Societies use rules and institutions to regulate these exchanges, with "deferred reciprocity" allowing gifts to be reciprocated over time, helping prevent exploitation or dependence. Social recognition and status also play a role, as giving or receiving can influence one's image and lead to feelings of humility or indebtedness.

Finally, exchanges are both rational and emotional, serving to uphold social cohesion in modern societies. They require balance and sensitivity to maintain fairness and avoid creating a sense of inequality.
